ACONE Winter Icebreaker: Doug Cooper

ACONE WINTER ICEBREAKER
DOUG COOPER - ANATOMY OF AN ACCIDENT

The vast majority of all GA accidents are attributed to pilot error. In too many of these tragedies, the pilot does not survive, leaving us without a first hand account of the the event from a pilots point of view.

In this ACONE Winter Icbreaker,  Doug Cooper takes us into the cockpit of his Aeronca 7AC Champ on the day in 2011 that he hit a tree while landing in solar glare conditions at Myricks Airfield, resulting in the destruction of the aircraft and critical injuries to himself. With emphasis on the "five hazardous attitudes of pilots" as identified by the FAA, he discusses each step in the error chain of what could easily have been a fatal mishap. He also discusses survival factors, and identifies three critical aspects of his accident that allowed him to return to flying after months of rehabilitation.

Doug Cooper is one of the founding members of the Taunton Pilots Association. He learned to fly at Falmouth in 1979 while stationed at Woods Hole in the U.S. Coast Guard. After he retired from the service, he earned Commercial, Instrument and Multi-engine ratings while working in the maritime industry. Since suffering serious injuries in the 2011 landing accident, resulting in the destruction of his Aeronca 7AC Champ, he has flown more than 1000 uneventful hours in his PA28-180, which has hand rudder controls. Doug lives in Bristol, RI and bases his airplane at Taunton.
